I may as well have just won the lottery, I got my dream job 1 day after my 18th birthday.
I'm now a full time video game tester for one of the top game producers. I make excellent pay, play video games ALL DAY, get amazing benefits, and free soda any time I visit the breakroom. Thats right, a free soda fountain machine, right next to the pool table, foozball table, and arcade machines.
so, thats my dream job, now a reality.
Whats yers?
Oh, and Aunty Mor, I know you're related to a bunch of gamers, and if they're wondering. They probably have a mental image of how awesome it is inside a game testing area. Multiply the awesomeness of their imagination by about 20 and you'll have the reality. |

Sounds just perfect. Well done Isaac
The biggest perk of my job is that I get free coffee when I'm in the office. When I'm out on site I have to use my wits, guile and natural instinct to get offered a coffee

Sounds like a fun job. The best part of my job is that it's so sad, it's actually funny. I mean, some of the people I've talked to, they just deserve a medal for having managed living over their 20's with such severe mental retardation. It gets to a point where you stop banging your head against your desk and you're just like... WOW. |

Hey Isaac, wanna get me a job?
Haha! Just kidding. Yours sounds like fun, but not as fun as mine. ;D (jk again.)
All I do is make mud pies for a living. |

Heh, go to monster.com and search for game tester or QA (quality assurance) tester. Search for jobs from the company Volt, they hired me and assigned me to activision, so if you see any advertisements from them, check it out.
Aside from that, I've only been to work 1 day so I'm prolly not gonna have a lot of pull as far as recommendations go. |

The best job ever... hmm, very close to what you have but with a chocolate fountain instead of a soda fountain, and free Millie's Cookies. But then you would get very fat...
The best job I ever saw was when I was going to a meeting with Dad on "take your daughter to work day" and we went to this office where almost everyone had quit because it had just been taken over by an overseas company, so the only people left were the two in the meeting and another 2 playing ping pong and drinking soda... and you just knew that they were beind payed thousands of pounds for it because they were a branch of hedge fund management... |

Wow, it just now hit me that I'm officially grown up... er... grown up-ish, in the terms of I can't just slack around all day.... well... I can't just slack around all day without getting paid for it.
Starting tomorrow though, I'mma start feeling the real burn of the job, I'm going to be working from 6am to 6pm, a 12 hour shift, for the next 2 weeks, at least, 6 days a week.... 6 to 6, 6 days a week....hmmmm. Anyways, 12 hours, plus the hour that it takes to drive there and an hour back, plus an half hour before I have to leave and some time at home to eat. All in all, I might take up drinking coffee... ick.
(by the way it is "an half hour" rather than "a half hour", I just figured this out recently... man, weird grammer rules suck.) |

Haha! Isaac. As they say in The Matrix..."Welcome to the real world" Next will be the mortgage then the bills etc.etc. Not too much fun being an adult is it? I am glad you have your dream job but there is no way I will let my addicted kids see what you do. My older son is heading for a job in Sainsburys and that'll do just fine. I may even get some discounted food out of it to fill his and his brothers bottomless teenage stomachs. I have my dream job and I am also my own boss. Perfect!

Isaac, Thanks! I'll look into it, then if I ever transfer down there for school it will be alot easier than driving there from Bakersfield every day. Which would suck btw. :D But yeah, Brian=totally going to look it up. |

Haha. Too bad I'm terrible at videogames. My dream job? Full time illustrator, conceptual artist or painter. Right now I'm doing mostly graphic design to bring in the bacon, and the worst part (and about 90%) of my job is coding. Which I can do all right but, frankly annoys me to no end.
GIVE ME PAINT anyday. Digital or Traditional! I don't care, I just love creating art. I've gotten a bunch of painting commissions lately, so I'm on the right track, I just can't wait until I've shucked off that designer safety belt and taken it on full time. It might be a while though, I still have a long way to go.
Oh well! |

Gracie - snap. Except for the coding bit. I am in the most dull, yet demanding Grrr Design job (trying to make commercial property look good - ergh).
I would really like to write instead.
But like a lot of dreamy jobs - try and make that pay the rent . . .
Damn it. Doh. And derrr.
*sigh*

Sorry I haven't updated or posted anything for a while. My computer is still out of commission, and since I was working all day, I didn't have much time for public computers. Anyways, I just finished my contract, which means I sit at home and wait until they have something else for me to do, until they call me again. Um yeah, while the job was totally awesome, it wasn't quite what I expected. I got stuck on the PS2, and later Wii version of the tony hawk game, while I looked across the hall to cubicles where other people played a better version of the game on the xbox360 and PS3. I'm really not a big tony hawk guy, but after playing it for so long, I developed a talent for the game. Oh, I also got to see people working guitar hero 3 (and got to play it a little) since I had never played the previous ones, I sucked at the game. But anyways, guitar hero 3 was amazing, they actually had a bunch of cool songs that I'm familiar with as well as my dad.
Anyways, yeah, so now I get a temporary break from the job, time to catch up on stuff. Quality Assurance testers get NO respect, just to let you know. But we do have full reign to complain about EVERYTHING a major perk to the job.
Um yeah, in addition to all that, I also applied for a new job that doesn't have to do with video games. You remember how I was whining about wanting to go to another country and stuff. Well rather than paying money to be a foreign exchange student, I applied to be a teacher in China. I'd be teaching English, and I don't even have to speak Chinese! I wouldn't be getting paid as much, and I wouldn't be working as much (12 hours a week as opposed to 12 hours a day) but it would be cool just to live there.
Yeah! I can see it all know, I step off the plane and am mobbed by OMM contributors from china all vying for my autograph (cause I'm famous and all) and then I'll get paraded through the streets and it will be a national holiday called... um... hello Isaac day!
But seriously though, I haven't been fully accepted yet, so I shouldn't get ahead of myself. But if I do, I think I’ll bring along a video camera and record parts of the trip. Stick it on YouTube or something, kind of like a video journal, or a miniseries. I'll call it "El Gringo Fuerte goes to China" or something like that.
I do realize that this post is kind of really long, but that’s what I get for not logging on enough.
I noticed that a lot of you like drawing, painting, illustrating, and such and would have it as your dream job. The interesting thing is that there are so many ways to make pictures and so many uses for them, from traditional paintings, to book illustrations, to video game design. I actually at one point intended to make a cartoon (like pennyarcade) about being a QA tester. I was going to make it a comic about rivalry between the loudmouthed angry smelly testers(me), the weird nerdy developers (programmers), and the uptight, suit wearing conniving producers (the bigwigs). So I made a few test comics, but the problem was I can never simplify my drawings. They all turned out to complicated to be comics, so if you can draw simple expressive people in comic style (like Garfield, not superman) and are interested in teaching the inner workings of video game production through cartoons, let me know. I'm not promising a job, or even a steady comic, I'm just curious to see how the comic would look.
Well that’s my rant. Enjoy.

If only I was a few years older and lived anywhere near Spokane, Washington... Cyan Worlds is looking for Game Testers. Ah well... *sigh* (If you don't know what I'm talking about: the creators of the Myst franchise. Now THAT would be a dream job.)
Anyway, good luck with your teaching application! I hope you get to go to China in the end. That should be a rewarding experience. |
