In fact, I don't even like dogs. At least not as much as cats, but, as you might have found out by now, there rarely are people who like both.
The thing with dogs seems to be, that, throughout their history of social intercourse with mankind, dogs have been more and more domesticated. Cats have been too, but they never seem to have accepted an uncomplicated relationship with humans, which, by them practically being social hooligans, has earned the sympathy of mankind. Cats can be gentle too, no doubt about that, but most of the time they are being just the opposite. In an absurd way, we like their randomness, to put it like that.
Randomness also plays a big part in the name "Tom" which, as we all know is just a short form of "Thomas", is strangely accepted in todays world. Think about famous people like Johnny Depp, who are rather popular as Johnny than as John Christopher Depp; in fact I'm quite sure that most non-native speakers will even believe that Johnny actually is his real name.
Concerning Wales I have little to say. It sounds like whale.
