Hi, I agree with both Jo and Sarah's comments. It's difficult to find a suitable picture to use as a winter template because of the large sections that are snow and sky. My thoughts were maybe to find a picture to use as a reference for the general landscape framework, buildings, trees, hills, etc. and then let everyone add whatever they want to their squares in the form of people etc. I was thinking that if we did find a picture we could crop it down, to get rid of some of the sky, if it would look OK with just the foreground. Any thoughts? The only winter pics I have found online so far that are half decent are:
http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/cgi-bin/WebObjects.dll/CollectionPublisher.woa/wa/work?workNumber=ng1346
http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/cgi-bin/WebObjects.dll/CollectionPublisher.woa/wa/work?workNumber=ng1479
But then I have probably not been looking in the right places. The other thought that just popped into my head was something along the lines of an advent calendar but not sure how we could work that and also Christmas is not for everyone so that's why a winter scene may be better. If we can't find a winter pic why not go for something like a Van Gogh as most of the canvas is filled with wild colour in all areas if we chose the right picture. Just trying to get the thought process going so if anyone has any thoughts throw them in.

Love the round one. Lots going on on there and it would be pretty impressive to have a round image rather than square. |

If we can move into a circle-ish formation the round one would be really cool, although we couldn't really do it otherwise as people on the outside would have hald their square as border.
I love the idea of an advent calendar or even the twelve days of christmas but not if people don't celebrate christmas or celebrate other holidays. Another idea is a christmas tree and everyone can put what they want on it.
I've had a look for winter pictures as well and there really aren't very many which are suitable. I like some of the winter scenes by Hiroshige, and if we wanted to go Christmas we could do the nativity by Botticelli. There is Boulevard Saint-Denis, Argenteuil, in Winter, by Monet but it's not very exciting all round. It really is more difficult than you would think to find good paintings. |

What if we did a "winter holidays" thing? it doesn't have to be just one month, I'm pretty sure that there are a number of different sorts of cultural celebrations that are held over the winter months. It'd allow for creativity if people were each assigned a different holiday and the "mural" would be relevant all winter long, thusly allowing some of the members who are only occasionally here ample time to join in.
I also like the round image idea- the people who have corners could maybe do some creative [non-distracting] design with the rest of the space they have availible in their square? I would volunteer to be a corner piece. |

I love the round image too, but anything is fine with me if it keeps this going |

I think the round image would be really effective too, but as Sarah said, it has problems. I think it would be difficult to move into a different formation and besides, we'd probably want to move back for the next one! One solution would be to stay in a square and fill the corners with a fancy border. It could be really elaborate or simple, depending on how confident people felt about it.

We could always crop the round picture so we just use a square section that has something of interest in it for everyone. Another thought that just came to mind is that if we didn't do a winter themed picture we could always do a world atlas in a square or oblong format which should have something for everyone if we found a good reference picture. |

Now why didn't I think of that? =D I really like the atlas idea too, we could add animals and plants to make the emptier squares more interesting. It would even work as a globe, as we could have planets and stars around the border, although you wouldn't see all the countries that way. |

I like that idea, it would look really good and would be a more long lasting project than a christmas one I also love the idea of putting planets and stars around the edge, it would frame it really nicely and make it stand out. |

Pretty much what I said- the corners can fill the empty space with some sort of design. I like it. |

Shubnum! So glad you came back. We finally have a (well almost) complete picture. There is one black square to the left of the collab that I am hoping Ricci will want but he has disappeared since I PMd him. Is anyone else interested in doing this? Let me know if you can think of anyone. BTW Nice fireworks Shubnum. |

Welcome back Shubnum =) It looks like things have slowed down a bit. How do people feel about cropping Mark's circular picture and doing that one over Christmas, then planning a world map for the new year? Do people have time to do a square at the moment during the run-up to Christmas or would skipping straight to a long-term project be better? |

Right now I don't think I have enough time to do one before christmas, (at least properly) but of everyone else thinks they can I could probably do something quick and easy of we want a complete christmas picture |

Well Christmas is just 9 days away now. Not a lot of response Jo. Shall we just white out our squares and see what happens? At least that way we will look a bit festive. If enough people do the same go with Marks image then and just hope everyone who doesn't post on the forum follows suit? Or...just go for the world map for next year? |

Hi, I have just changed my square to a very roughly drawn winter scene (currently unfinished). Does anyone want to link onto the picture? If not I am happy to join onto anything anyone else starts. I think Moira is right that with Christmas Holidays racing towards us it may be best to start the next formal project in the New Year. Are we going for the globe or atlas picture next year or should we ask everyone for ideas? Is anyone any good at getting reference pictures and griding them up as I have no idea?
