well, "definitions" for that vary. let's say it generally is a paintin done in a short amount of time. usually about an hour, but you know, some people say that everything done in one session is a speedpainting. personally, I try to keep it within three hours, if I call something a speedpainting. they're fun, they're quick, and you learn a lot because you have to focus on important things and not get lost in details =) |

Yeah, with how busy I am, I can rarely get a full 3 hour chunk or even a 2 hour chunk in my day; usually I'll still call something like a 2 hour painting session a speedpaint still, even if I broke the time up into four 30 minute sessions over the course of four days. Back when I had a lot more free time, I'd sit for hours and knock out 2 or 3 speedpaints with dan in one day... now I just draw whenever i get a chance to. (Usually during my lunches, I'll paint.)
That's why i love the OMM, perfect quick tool for doodles and unrefined paintings - I spend many a brief moment putting some touch on a painting here when I get a free moment. Haha
But yeah, I agree with dan on what a speedpaint is - definitions and times will vary for many people; some say it can be only 30 minutes, some people extend it to 5 hours... but I think anything that FEELS like a speedpaint in how you are forced to rush and must knock out the important stuff first - many people are slow painters, so even 3 hours seems awfully short sometimes If you are quick, and you spend any time after a half hour dawdling on details and slowing down, then a 3-hour session wouldn't be a speedpaint anymore. I think the definition is loose because every artist is unique
Speedpaints though, I think more than anything else, keep you loose, disciplined, and painting more. The times I do speedpaints are like practice exercises for my eyes; I use reference photos and speedpaint to improve my critical drawing eye and that makes it easier the more you do it. You get faster too Not everyone uses a reference, but I like practicing still, I don't feel like I'm a master of any one thing yet. At least, not that fast
I think speedpaint is based in the digital art world more than the traditional vocabulary because a lot of concept artists use speedpaints as a base sketch for more detailed conceptual designs. Same with mattepainting for movies I think But every speedpaint is basically about one thing: time, and getting your ideas down as quickly as you can.
Anyhow i'll be adding the new tallies to the forums here today

and jeez it's amazing what those concept artists pull off in two or three hours >.> they so give me the feeling of inspiration/motivation and frustration at the same time which is kinda weird, but true. ah well. one day.... |

Hey Shanna, congrats on finishing school, good luck with the results, you know we will all want to know how you have done.
Gracie is the 28th Nov still the last date for votes? Are the people who haven't voted getting reminders as their seem to be over half the people who haven't voted? Also I have seen a few people who haven't been moved yet who I think have asked to be involved so they may be holding off on voting until they get moved. It might be worth getting them to vote now prior to their move.
Cheers Mark |

Yeah; I'm not really sure what's going on at this point - haha. But I think we can hold off on the closing day for votes; I'm just worried about the time we'll have to actually draw the new collab - but it's a big group, I guess it's to be expected we have a big process involved. I know the holidays are also keeping me busy; I'm sure it might be the case for others as well. Shanna - Congrats! |

HI EVERYONE I HOPE YOU ARE ALL DOING GREAT.. JUST UNPACKED MY COMPUTER FROM A VERY DUSTY BOX... WOW THERE ARE SOME GREAT IDEAS FOR THE COLLAB... I LOVE SHANNA'S IDEA MOST I THINK BUT A SUPERPIC WOULD ALSO BE VERY COOL...IT WOULD BE VISIBLE FROM THE MOON... HEY JUST NOTICED THE LAST POST IS FROM THE 27TH OF NOV. MAYBE WE CAN JUST START DRAWING SHANNAS IDEA...WE ALL JUST PIC A COUNTRY, SELECT SOME MAIN THINGS FROM THERE AND DRAW THEM USING SHANNA'S MAIN IDEA.... IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE EXACTLY JUST SORT OF A FANTASY WORLD OF ALL THINGS WE LIKE THAT SYMBOLIZES THE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES...AND ALSO AS PEOPLE JOIN THEY CAN JUST BUILD ON IT...
THE THING IS WE DONT JUST HAVE TO DRAW ONE IMAGE RIGHT... I LIKE THE SUPERIMAGE IDEA TOO BUT IT SEEMS KIND OF HARDER TO ORGANIZE AND I GET THE FEEL PEOPLE WORRY ABOUT GETTING STUCK WITH STUFF LIKE JUST SKY...
WELL IT IS GETTING LATE... IF THERE IS ANYONE OUT THERE STILL LET ME KNOW I AM UNPACKING MY TABLET TOMORROW EEEEHAAAA.... WATCH FOR THE LINES HMMMM....THINKING GAMBIA...OR MAYBE MALAYSIA....
SEE YA TOMORROW
PEACE OUT JOE |

It's me, chimera- I've just changed my screen name.
My votes: 1- 08 2- 24 3- 20
Sorry it's taken me so long to get on this- I've been uber busy/uber concerned about a few things so I haven't been online a whole lot. I'm [hopefully] signed up for the email notifications though, so if I drift away again I'll be back when needed! |

How many of us are there now? I haven't been moved yet, which is probably a good thing as I'll never get any work done once I'm "officially" involved |

Hey Shanna, what's procrastination, I'll have to look it up......well maybe tomorrow Joe could you explain more about the superpic idea it sounds interesting? Could we do a seasonal themed quick temporary scene while we are waiting for other people to be moved into the Big Collab area? A snow scene would work with snowmen Christmas trees, ice skaters etc as it should be easy to join up with most of it being white and could be done without a reference. Any thoughts? Gracie, I know you are probably rushed off your feet with work at the moment is there anything we can do to help with the Big Collab like get a list of the people together who need to be moved? I noticed a few of the Big Collab people made it into the calendar just wondered who was in out of the group. Cheers Mark

I think regarding the theme we should just wait what the result of the vote will be, seeing as this will be the will of most people =) There will probably always be people who want to join and yet have to be moved, so I think there won't be a point when we can say "now everyone is in, let's start" therefor I could imagine that just making all the current members vote, then tally and then start painting immediately would be the best thing, and any newcomers could just pick up that idea and add their own squares to them. The pictures which the people have been voting for the most are also ones where the problem of "just sky" or "plain colour" would not occur much, I think, so we won't have to worry about that too much =) |

wow, i didn't even see what joe wrote, my name is mentioned heaps in there hehe. I would be happy to do a better sketch and things if people wanna go that way. But it seems weve all got our heart sets on the pictures gracie came up with, that are really unique and easier to execute. |
